Wagaman Mill Dam

Built: 1918

Owner: W.H. Wageman, Jasper County Conservation Board

Height: 12 feet

Length: 84 feet

Hazards: drownings, portage, urban

Warning Signs: Installed fall/winter 2007-08.

Portage: Take out at Skunk River Access on river left above the dam and opposite of the mill.

Comments: Both sides of the river are connected by a foot bridge at the mill. As canoeists portage at Wagaman, they can travel across the bridge to the mill, a bed and breakfast beside the mill, and into Lynnville (good ice cream at the Zip’n gas station!). The mill is open every Sunday, 2-4 pm, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Private mill tours can also be arranged.


Fatalities 2

  • February 12, 1967 - Shelby Crawford, slipped on ice and into water flowing over the dam
  • May 26, 1923 - Kenneth Wagaman, age 3, fell in and was carried over the dam
